On 22 May 2025, come join GRAIN and the Resisting Pension Fund Capitalism project as we discuss the alarming expansion of predatory finance in the Asia Pacific region. The meeting, hosted by Public Services International, will focus on the impacts that private equity firms, pension funds, and sovereign wealth funds have on workers, food systems and public services, and what can be done to challenge their growing power.Date: Thursday May 22, 2025, 12h30 Delhi / 14h Jakarta / 17h SydneyThe world is being acquired, reorganised, privatised, and transformed through a process referred to as “financialisation”. Lead actors in this process— the private equity firms, pension fund managers and sovereign wealth funds of the world— are more and more present in all aspects of our lives, extracting profits from our schools, hospitals, food systems and homes and taking over farmlands, water and basic infrastructure. Their increasing power drives higher prices, worker exploitation, land grabs and a reduction in the quality and accessibility of essential services. Yet these influential actors mainly operate behind the scenes, hidden from view. The event May 22, will pay special attention to the emergence of so-called sovereign wealth funds and how these are being used to privatise and sell off public assets to financial companies. Discussion will focus on collective strategies and actions that can be taken to address the growing presence of these financial actors and challenge their growing power.Presentations will include:GRAIN on general trends of financialisation and implications for the region’s food systemsIBON Foundation on the Maharlika Fund— an SWF launched in the Philippines targeting mining and agricultureIndonesian power workers union PP-IP on resistance to the privatisation agenda behind the "green energy transition"CICTAR on private equity's impacts on health care and energy servicesTo register go to https://world-psi.zoom.us/meeting/register/2feUMMmgTbaBw8wERTY5_w
