New job opening at GRAIN: Asia programme staff

Starting: 1 JULY 2022

GRAIN is a small international non-profit organisation that works to support small food producers, workers and social movements in their struggles for community-controlled and biodiversity-based food systems. Our support takes the form of independent research and analysis, networking at local, regional and international levels, and fostering new forms of cooperation and alliance-building. Most of our work is oriented towards, and carried out in, the global South. For more information, see https://www.grain.org.

GRAIN’s work programme is divided into four thematic areas:

- corporations (agribusiness, finance, food retail, fisheries, digital ag, free trade agreements...)

- land (farmland grabbing, resistance strategies)

- seeds (fighting patents and seed laws, supporting farmers’ own seeds systems)

- climate (exposing the role of the industrial food system, supporting food sovereignty as solution)

In all four areas we do research and information work on the one hand, and movement work on the other.

We are now looking to add a new programme staff to help us with our work in the Asia-Pacific region. The new person will work intensively with other GRAIN staff and partners in the region.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Research and information work:

  • produce research-based information outputs on the issues GRAIN works on, together with partners in the region.

  • collaborate with other GRAIN staff on ongoing research projects in the region, and bring regional grounding into our global research and analysis

  • share GRAIN's analysis and data directly with groups & media in Asia

Movement building work:

  • develop relations and joint activities with partners and allies in the region (e.g. campaigns, actions, etc.) on the issues that GRAIN works on

  • help develop strategies and coalitions of resistance towards threats to peasant agriculture in the region, and support the building of community-based alternatives to industrial agriculture.

  • participate in skill-sharing activities like workshops or trainings

REQUIREMENTS:

  • The person must be based in Asia.

  • Autonomy, someone able to work on their own in a highly decentralised, horizontal and international collective.

  • Experience working with social movements involved in the struggle for food sovereignty in Asia.

  • Good grasp of the issues that GRAIN works on and affinity with our views.

  • Proven capacity to develop and implement research and information work

  • Fluency and ability to work and write clearly in non-academic English

  • Availability to travel

  • Good internet connection

CONDITIONS:

This is a full-time position (though we are open to other proposals). The initial contract is for one year, but it is GRAIN's hope to establish a longer-term relationship. The person can be based anywhere in Asia. Salary will be commensurate with what is paid in the person's place of work for a similar position within the NGO sector. Benefits include health care, child allowance and pension. GRAIN is committed to having a diverse staff team and especially encourages young people and women to apply.

Please send a CV, motivation letter and contact details of three references to [email protected] by 1 April 2022. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted by 15 April. Thank you!
