A journey through 30 years supporting the struggle for food sovereignty

by GRAIN | 10 Jul 2020

Come take a guided tour through 30 years of GRAIN’s history supporting the struggle for food sovereignty. Through interviews and animation, you will discover how an endeavour that initially focused mainly on seeds became the multifaceted international organisation GRAIN is today, supporting the peasant movement and the struggle for food sovereignty at large.

This short 7-minute video looks into some of the landmark battles around peasant agriculture, which have marked GRAIN’s work these last decades, and the responses put forth by grassroots movements around the world. As GRAIN’s focus evolved over the years, so too did its approach: it moved from institutional advocacy to prioritising technical support to the movements and producing in-depth research to help reveal the actors behind GMOs, land grabbing, FTAs, climate change, and other corporate abuses harming small farmers, the food chain and the planet, while actively supporting community-based alternatives like agroecology and food sovereignty.

Within this story, the animation of Megan Basaldua takes us a bit further back in time, from the dawn of agriculture to the current struggle of a peasant community to defend its land, seeds and livelihood: a window into our ongoing pursuit of food sovereignty and a hint of where true hope for the future lies.
