The Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) is a broad alliance of different civil society actors who are part of the struggle for food sovereignty and agro-ecology in Africa. These include: African farmers' organisations, African NGO networks, specialist African NGOs, consumer movements in Africa, international organisations who support the stance of AFSA, and individuals. Its’ members represent small holder farmers, pastoralists, hunter/gatherers, indigenous peoples; Faith based institutions, and environmentalists from across Africa.  It is a network of networks and currently with 25 active members.

 AFSA aspires to contribute towards:

  • Africa developing just and equitable ways of life for her people in harmony with Nature
  • Africa continually harnessing and enhancing her traditional knowledge systems
  • African peoples controlling their territories, livelihoods and governance systems and related decision making processes
  • African peoples holding their governments and corporate powers to account for their legacy to the future generations.

AFSA is seeking qualified applicants for the position of West Africa Staff to be based in any of the West African countries. This position will be responsible for developing and implementing a research and advocacy agenda focusing on food sovereignty and agroecology in Africa.

This position reports to the Coordinator of the AFSA.

Responsibilities:

  1. Spearhead development and implementation of a research and advocacy agenda on AFSA issues across Africa.
  2. Identify strategic issues in the broader food sovereignty agenda especially focusing on majority and marginalized groups such as food producers, pastoral groups and indigenous groups among others.
  3. Take lead in Writing reports, briefing papers, letters, news and releases, for the AFSA and work also with media.
  4. Collaborate with AFSA partners to support the resistance against land grabbing.
  5. Support the fundraising function in AFSA.

Qualifications:

  • At least Masters in natural resources management, project management, social sciences, development, agriculture or related fields.
  • A minimum of 3 years of professional level experience working with NGO, social movements, coalition, groups, and/or peasant organization in Africa.

Desired Skills and Knowledge:

  • Understanding of the problem of food sovereignty in Africa
  • Ability to identify, research, analyze food sovereignty issues
  • Ability to develop and implement effective advocacy strategies, including strategies targeting multi-national corporations and international financial institutions
  • Ability to work flexible hours and make frequent trips for extended periods
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the media is required; ability to use social media to further advocacy and outreach goals is desirable
  • Strong writing and spoken skills in English and French is a must.

Duration: Fixed-term contract for one-year period with a strong possibility of renewal.
