How are countries around the globe responding to the homogenisation of plant variety protection brought about by the TRIPS agreement? This companion publication to 3D's Backgrounder Seeds of Hunger tackles these questions by providing figures about market concentration in the seed and food markets and information on relevant intellectual property rules. For each market, the global perspective is provided along with seven case studies: India, South Africa, Brazil, the United States, the European Union, Cambodia and Tanzania. The findings illustrate market concentration along the food supply chain for the last 15 years (although at a speedier pace in the seed market) and the global expansion of UPOV’s legislation on plant variety protection.
