Communities & activists protest against pro-GM anti-conservation remarks of Biodiversity Authority Chairperson in India

by | 29 Jan 2008
In the third week of January 2008, the head of the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) of India Prof. S.Kannaiyan at a public gathering made comments favouring the use of GM. Set up under India's Biological Diversity Act, 2002 the NBA is a statutory body meant to oversee the implementation of the CBD (Convention on Biological Diversity) in the country. The pro-IPR and now the outright pro-GMO stance of the NBA has both communities and those working at the grassroots gravely concerned. In the light of the above many have been openly protesting. On 25th January 2008 some of them got together to issue an open letter to the NBA chairperson asking for his resignation, followed by a press release. Both of the documents are attached.
